Match #67: Iceman King Parsons & Skip Young vs. Pretty Young Things (8/17/84)

Norvell Austin and Koko Ware come in from Memphis for a run in World Class under their PYT moniker. They were good on the Memphis set, so we’ll see how this all Afro-American match works out in good ‘ol boy land.
The PYT are dressed like Michael Jackson, complete with gloves. Skip Young, who I’ve seen in Mid South, looks nervous. The punches from Skip Young take a bit of getting used to, but the way these guys run the ropes is so fast it’s exciting. Skip clears the ring and the crowd goes nuts for he and Ice Man.

Skip is awkward at times, but he’s quick, and overall works well with Austin. Parsons comes in and works a headlock on Austin, then Koko Ware comes in and looks good working over Young as the five minute mark passes.

The PYT get the heat on Young until the hot tag to Parsons, who comes out doing his boxing spot. It gets more brutal with Parsons in there, as Koko gains control with a stiff looking knee lift, and then the PYT swarm all over the Ice Man. They take it to the mat for a rest and I get bored. Parsons hope spots are the highlight of the match so far for me, as he really looks like he’s fighting. The PYT double team as we pass the ten minute mark. Skip Young off the hot tag throws a fun jumping dropkick. He takes out both PYTs, Parsons joining in. Skip overshoots a body press but still ends up with the pin in eleven minutes.

This was mostly a PYTs match, and I found I liked Ware’s stuff more than Austin’s work. I recall them from the Memphis from April to June of ‘84, and I thought they looked better there, but they also worked Gilbert/Rich and the Fabs, so it’s not a fair comparison. I thought Skip Young’s style wasn’t my taste (didn’t like him in Mid South either), but I thought Parsons was pretty locked in in this match. I also thought the PYT double teams were solid. Overall this wasn’t a match that hooked me, as it was fine but felt average for this set over all, and average ends up in the lower half. 2 ½ stars and 5/10

Match # 84: Fabulous Ones vs. Pretty Young Things (4/22/85)

This is the original Fabs, with Steve Keirn and Stan Lane, who I prefer much more then the Gilbert/Rich team. The PYT of Austin and Koko is much more suited for this match up, at least in my opinion, so I’m excited for this one.

This match is for the AWA Southern tag titles. Match is joined in progress with the best possible introductory move. Stve Keirn monkey flips Austin onto his head in a scary but cool looking bump. Crowd is electric for this. PYT gets cleared out of the ring. We’re about 5 minutes in apparently. Whoever is announcing with Lance Russell brings a lot of excitement to the booth.

The Fabs do some comedy while they dominate, and Koko plays their stooge in a fun spot. They focus on the right arm of Austin. I really like the way the PYT gain control and go crazy on Stan Lane. They cheat/double team/cut off the ring so quickly and effectively. It really picks up in the right parts to get me involved as a fan. It slows down at the right part too, and the crowd is insane for this match. They love the Fabs, and you can see the heels milk that reaction. Big reactions for the kick outs and hope spots. The PYT offense isn’t my style, but that’s Memphis, and they do the right things at the right moments for a reaction.

Finish really sucks as the Fabs run wild with the hot tag, beat up the PYT, and Lanny Poffo runs in to beat up the Fabs. That’s it. This was one of those matches where you wish they called an audible in the ring and just said, “Man this crowd is hot for this. Let’s just do a clean finish”. Then again, the point was to keep them hot enough to pay the next week, and I guess they were. I just watch wrestling so differently than the way that it was promoted (single matches where I look for the art and the perfect match), so this doesn’t fall into a nice category for me. Still, a great 15 minute match. 3 ½ and 7.3/10.

Generic pretty boy babyfaces brawling with the great heel team of PYT (Norvell Austin and Koko Ware). The PYT just beat them pillar to post early as all four men are legal, and so is the outside stuff.

The Daydreamers suck at throwing punches, and in this match that’s pretty much your bread and butter. This match is exactly the kind of stuff people would later complain about in reference to ECW a decade later. Hardcore from everybody isn’t a good thing, and even if this was the only craziness on the card, these are the wrong guys to do it with. This match did nothing for me. Koko Ware had a great drop kick off the second rope. The Daydreamers played their underdog role decently. All of it ran together. The D-Dreamers did come back around the ten minute mark. They did do a good stereo back drop spot. The PYT did use a cane shot to cheat and win. 2 ¼ and 4/10.
