Match # 148: Eddie Gilbert & Dick Murdoch vs. Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts (6/25/87) Looks like the Freebirds get to be babyfaces for once. That’s a welcome change for me. Murdoch and Gilbert tries to take out Bam Bam’s leg. First Doc, now this? Crazy Gilbert! What were those two thinking? We shall see [...]
Match # 147: Dick Murdoch vs. Dr. Death (6/13/87) This was set up a month before in a post-match TV angle we just covered in match # 146. Eddie Gilbert and Dick Murdoch tried to break Doc’s arm, with Murdoch stomping the arm into a steel chair from the top rope. Huge injury angle in [...]
Match # 146: Eddie Gilbert vs. Dr. Death (5/17/87) Doc sprints to the ring for this TV main event. Eddie Gilbert is going to have Dick Murdoch in his corner. He tells me so in a promo he cuts with Captain Redneck. Murdoch says he showed the brainbuster finish and Gilbert acts like a goof. [...]
Match # 145: Chris Adams vs. Terry Taylor (5/3/87) Magnum TA is announcing with Jim Ross. This must be post car accident. He shares the booth with Jim Ross for this rematch. Early on both guys struggle and escape holds like this is a shoot match. I love that. Back and forth to show they [...]
Match # 144: Chris Adams vs. Terry Taylor (4/19/87) These two men were partners and tag team champions recently. We reviewed one of their matches with Hot Stuff International. Now they’ve decided to be singles competitors, though I’m not sure if Adams has turned yet. I can almost bet cash it won’t be Taylor who [...]
Match # 143: One Man Gang vs. Big Bubba Rogers (4/19/87) A meeting of the future “Dream Team”, as Akeem the African Dream and The Big Bossman square off. Accept they go by Bubba Rogers and the One Man Gang here, and Slick is nowhere to be found. Doc is at ringside announcing with Jim [...]
Match # 142: Chris Adams & Terry Taylor vs. Eddie Gilbert & Iceman Parsons (3/20/87) The story is Adams and Parsons were once tag team partners in a tournament in Mid South (apparently because of the World Class connections). They broke up and Parsons went heel, joining Eddie Gilbert’s Hot Stuff International. Hence this match.
Match # 141: Ted DiBiase vs. One Man Gang (No DQ) (2/6/87) A rematch in Houston of a surprisingly good match from earlier in the set (Match # 135). This was follows the storyline as it now has a stipulation of No DQ and its Dibiase challenging for OMG’s UWF Championship. We begin…
Match # 140: Ted DiBiase & Dr. Death vs. Terry Gordy & Michael Hayes (Badstreet Match) (1/25/87) No need for a huge write up. We’ve seen many combinations of these four men in the ring during the last several Mid South Diaries. In fact, we’ve seen this exact match with this exact stipulation. Funny thing [...]
Match # 139: The Fantastics & Dr. Death vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (1/18/87) Apparently storyline-wise Terry Gordy is to blame for all of this. Gordy attacked the Fantastics recently, and we know he’s had a longstanding feud with Death – Dr. Death Steve Williams. This allows Hayes and Roberts of the Freebirds to slide into [...]
Match # 138: Ted DiBiase & Dr. Death vs. Terry Gordy & Michael Hayes (Badstreet Match) (1/9/87) It’s funny that Gordy and Hayes wear cut off T-shirts and jeans here as the cool heels, and a decade later Stevie Richards would do it as a “clueless putz”. I only bring it up because Gordy and [...]
After Nine Disks 1. Ted DiBiase vs. Hacksaw Duggan (No DQ, Loser Leaves Town, Coal Miner’s Glove on a Poll, Tuxedo, Cage match ) (3/22/85) [BR-14] 2. Butch Reed vs. Dick Murdoch (9/22/85) [BW-1] 3. Terry Taylor vs. Ric Flair (6/1/85) [RNRIK-7] 4. Mr. Wrestling II & Magnum T.A. vs. Midnight Express (2/10/84) [PTB-16] 5. [...]
Disk 9 Rankings 1. Hacksaw Duggan, Terry Taylor & Bill Watts vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (8/17/86) [BSUSA-8] 2. Terry Gordy vs. Dr. Death (9/15/86) [BSUSA-11] 3. Ted DiBiase & Terry Taylor vs. Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts (Country Whipping Match) (10/12/86) [BSUSA-14] 4. Terry Gordy vs. Hacksaw Duggan (8/3/86) [BSUSA-6] 5. Terry Gordy vs. Dr. [...]
Match # 137: Terry Gordy vs. Dr. Death (12/28/86) This is getting to be a fun habit between these two. They start out brawling. Gordy is the aggressor. Doc holds his own and eventually wins out. Good execution of a common early match formula. Gordy maneuvers out of a piledriver attempt, a big move many [...]
Match # 136: Terry Gordy vs. Dr. Death (12/26/86) Match starts in progress, which I hate, and it seems deep into the match at first. Thankfully it’s only four minutes in, though they are already into Gordy getting the heat. The match is slow and plodding in the early going. It’s basically one big bear [...]
Match # 135: Ted DiBiase vs. One Man Gang (11/18/86) One Man Gang is now the champion? Things have gotten suddenly puzzling in an otherwise great 1986. Actually this may be when a Gordy car accident, combined with nagging injuries he worked through during the title reign, conspired to take him out of action for [...]
Match # 133: Ted DiBiase & Terry Taylor vs. Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts (Country Whipping Match) (10/12/86) This match comes out of the 8/31/86 lumberjack match I’d guess. Heel Freebirds are cocky when they come out. Faces come out to “Born in the USA” because we can’t have a face not come out to [...]
Match # 134: The Fantastics vs. John Tatum & Jack Victory (11/4/86) This match rules from the first image. It’s Hollywood John Tatum! He’s like a younger Jim Belushi, if Jim was younger and hammed it up with blond hair. I love that guy. His tag partner is Jacko – the journeyman Jack Victory, who [...]
Match # 132: Terry Gordy vs. Dr. Death (9/28/86) They put a lot of people in a bull ring in Little Rock, Arkansas. They even put in two side by side rings. War Games? It wasn’t even done yet (first War Games was ’87). I’d guess a battle royal, back when that was a big [...]
Match # 131: Terry Gordy vs. One Man Gang (9/21/86) This interested me on paper because One Man Gang was always a heel. It’s confirmed here too. He has Skandor Akbar with him and a flag. I assumed something Middle Eastern, but it looks like a pirate flag. Why didn’t Doc come out and slap [...]
