You spend a few hours off the web, not expecting terrible news like this. I was quite shocked to learn just a few minutes ago the passing of Edward Fatu, better known as Umaga.

He was only 36 when he died in a hospital earlier today. As one might expect, he had his issues (WWE fired him this summer after a second Wellness Policy violation and he refused to enter rehab). With one glaring exception two and a half years ago, I’ve chosen not to harp on the lifestyles these guys lead (smarter and more experienced people than I already do that) and think back to career highlights. In Fatu’s case, it was as an entertaining old school monster heel. When he first popped up on the Raw after WrestleMania 22, I thought he was pretty goofy and in the wrong decade, but he eventually won me over with his entertaining squash matches and demeanor. He’ll be remembered for being a part of main focus of WrestleMania 23 with McMahon and Trump, but I’ll remember him more for his Last Man Standing Match with John Cena at the 2007 Royal Rumble, a damn fine night for both men.

Early on, he was the result of everyone taking up “3 minutes” of Eric Bischoff’s time. He held the Intercontinental Title a couple times. He slaughtered poor souls with his rapid fire ass in the corner and hitch-hiking into their throat. He just recently toured Australia with The Nature Boy and that Hollywood blond jabronie. Most importantly, he beat the piss out of annoying pseudo-celebs who couldn’t sell. Thanks for the memories, ya beast.

After all the fun I had doing the Mid South Diaries, I’ve decided to take a crack at the 1980s Memphis project being run at Death Valley Driver’s Message board. For any background just look up the Mid South Diaries at the top of the page, or through tags and categories.

Jerry Jarrett took over the Memphis territory in the late 70s, using Jarrett Promotions to run the CWA (Memphis wrestling). His centerpiece was Jerry “The King” Lawler, who modern fans will know from is announcing of WWE’s RAW program. But there were many great stars, like Bill Dundee and Dutch Mantell to name two, who modern fans like myself should be introduced to. I’ll attempt to give young fans a gateway to these wrestlers once again, and give older fans a chance to relive glory days through my eyes. Of course, these are my eyes, opinions, and thoughts. This 27-year-old is admittedly a product 0f the 1990s, with my glory days being 90s ECW, this decade’s ROH, and a love for All Japan’s 90s run. I love and thirst for wrestling history, but my eyes have been tainted by my own experiences and views. You have been warned.

So starting this weekend, prepare for new Diaries. Last time we had revelations like Hector and Chavo, John Tatum, The greatness of Ted Dibiase as a lead heel, the fully realized potential of Jim Duggan as a babyface, Freebird dominance, and so much more from the mind of Bill Watts/Mid South Wrestling. Prepare yourself to follow my own journey through 125 Memphis matches from the 1980s, and hundreds of angles/storylines.

The BS With Honor crew takes an excursion from discussing ROH for once, and they weren’t even sent home for it! MetalBobattended WrestleMania XXIV and gives his thoughts on the big matches and the Citrus Bowl experience. Steve, who ordered the show, chimes in as well, while Brian, who was too busy and uninterested to order, asks questions both odd and dumb in an attempt to steer the conversation. For the coup de grace, Bob also discusses his first (and likely last) time attending a taping of TNA Impact, which you don’t want to miss.
