Match #21: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Von Erichs (7/4/83) The Freebirds/Von Erich feud gets a shot in the arm. 2/3 falls with a big hot crowd at the county fairgrounds. I’ve heard a lot of people are high on this one.
Match #20: Jimmy Garvin vs. David Von Erich (6/17/83) The big rematch from Reunion Arena. Three times the Texas Title has been held up after three Garvin/David matches. Will we finally get a winner on a big show?
Match #19: Harley Race vs. Kevin Von Erich (6/17/83) This is for the NWA World Championship. A Von Erich title shot, and it’s the always fun Kevin. Let’s see how Harley makes him look.
Match #18: Terry Gordy vs. Kerry Von Erich (No DQ) (6/10/83) I’ve been waiting for this singles match up all set. This is no DQ, with Kevin seconding Kerry, and Hayes seconding Gordy (his tag team championship partner, as they are set to defend against Kerry and Bruiser Brody at a big show coming up.)
Match #17: The Fabulous Freebirds & Jimmy Garvin vs. The Von Erichs & Iceman King Parsons (Elimination Match) (5/27/83) In the intro to the Von Erichs for this match announcer Bill Mercer delivers his classic line that was immortalized in the World Class documentary, Heroes of World Class: “And now let’s turn our attention to [...]
Match #16: Jimmy Garvin vs. David Von Erich (5/27/83) It’s the debut on the World Class Diaries of Gorgeous Jimmy, another famed Von Erich foil. He should be good, and we have a whole backstory to follow leading up to the match.
Match #15: Iceman King Parsons, Kevin & David Von Erich vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (5/13/83) Another six-man match, no penalty box, Freebirds and Von Erichs (with the Ice Man). The rivalry continues. I’m a little more excited for Kevin than David, and a little is putting it mildly.
Match # 14: Chavo Guerrero, Iceman King Parsons & Kerry Von Erich vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Penalty Box Match) (4/29/83) I’ve missed Chavo since the Mid South Diaries. I saw Ice Man in the late 80s on ESPN. I liked him and Brickhouse Brown (which makes me think as a white guy I must group [...]
Match # 13: Ric Flair vs. Kevin Von Erich (4/1/83) I cherish all the 80s Flair I can get considering the way he embarrasses himself every week on TNA. From Mid South to Memphis, Flair rules the Diaries series, and once again we get a Flair versus Von Erich match, this time against the oldest, [...]
Disk 1 Rankings 1. Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich (2/3 falls) (8/15/82) 2. Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich (Cage Match) (12/25/82) 3. The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Von Erichs (Lumberjack Match) (2/18/83) 4. Ric Flair vs. David Von Erich (10/11/82) 5. Ric Flair vs. Terry Gordy (2/4/83) 6. Kevin Von Erich vs. King [...]
Match # 12: Buddy Roberts vs. David Von Erich (3/18/83) More Von Erich/Freebirds magic, with the oldest Freebird versus the second oldest Von Erich brother.
Match # 11: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Von Erichs (Lumberjack Match) (2/18/83) Now the feud comes into full bloom with Buddy, Hayes, and Gordy trotting out for a showdown with the three Von Erich brothers, lumberjacks included. A fun stip for this feud that has better-than-average potential.
Match # 10: Michael Hayes vs. Kerry Von Erich (2/7/83) The Von Erich versus Freebirds feud in full swing, we get the “leaders” of the groups in singles action.
Match # 9: Ric Flair vs. Terry Gordy (2/4/83) We start where we always should, with Ric Flair cutting an arrogant, controlled promo to Bill Mercer about his match, his life, and being the champ. Gordy and Hayes cut promos on Flair that are pretty impressive. An odd, but interesting heel versus heel dynamic.
Match # 8: Terry Gordy vs. Kevin Von Erich (1/10/83) I’ve grabbed Gene Boyer for a dorkfest of wrestling proportions. So this probably won’t be as detailed a review, but it’s the kick off of Freebirds and Von Erich feud.
Match # 7: Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich (Cage Match) (12/25/82) This match is well-known enough I won’t give any hype or go over anything until after the jump. Just know this match is famous for a lot of reasons.
Match # 6: David Von Erich, Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy vs. The Sharpe Brothers & Tom Steele (12/25/82) This clever little match was on the Christmas day card, cementing the Von Erich’s trust and overall babyface love felt towards the Freebirds going into the main event.
Match # 5: Checkmate & Magic Dragon vs. Al Madril & Bugsy McGraw (10/26/82) Checkmate (he of the flying head butt) is back with Magic Dragon. We’ve swapped out Lothario for McGraw. Let’s hope this is above the average, yet fun match we had last time.
Match # 4: Checkmate & Magic Dragon vs. Jose Lothario & Al Madril (10/12/82) Well, we had to come down to earth sometime. No Flair, no Von Erichs, and the only guy I know in this match is the Super Sock, Jose Lothario. I didn’t like him in Mid South, so I’m tentative about this [...]
Match # 3: Ric Flair vs. David Von Erich (10/11/82) Flair faces David after just squeaking past Kerry two months before. This is my first time putting David under the microscope, and it’s a World Title match. Anything from Flair in the 1980s is worth a strong look.
