BS With Honor #130 (Part 2)
Posted on October 19, 2012 by Steve Kriske
A mere 6 1/2 months after the event, we present our second in-depth discussion on Showdown in the Sun: Day 2 and the potential Match of the Year, Davey Richards vs. Michael Elgin. See if our opinions have changed and if we’ve seen anything new on second viewing (spoiler alert – yes to each, in some cases) or just relive the magic and find out all of our match ratings.

As promised in this episode (26:54 mark), here’s my more firm, detailed account of the Edwards-Steen finish that we kind of stumbled over when we talked about it:
Steen powerbombs Edwards and goes into a sharpshooter.
[SHOOT] Steen leans over to tell Edwards something (perhaps to transition, a normal way of calling a match, but done not so smoothly).
Edwards turns the sharpshooter attempt into a leg lock and turns it over into the Achilles Lock.
[SHOOT] Steen tells the ref something (perhaps that he’s hurt) and the ref relays the message to Edwards.
Edwards releases the hold while still having a grip on the leg, leans over for a second to be small packaged by Steen.

“we kind of stumbled over when we talked about it”
We were just being meta…
But seriously, I mostly got it right on my second pass at it. Those are the facts, but opinion-wise, how bad do you think it looked?

Pretty bad, yes. If it was a finish prompted by injury, it was certainly better than Steve Austin’s amazing-broken-neck school boy on Owen Hart.

Great show guys! Going off of your discussion towards the end of the podcast, can you guys recall any match pre-BSWH that either of you gave a score of “10″ to? I’d imagine matches like McGuiness/Danielson from Driven or Danielson/Kenta from Glory by Honor V came close at the very least. Anything else perhaps?

I don’t specifically remember, but those two and Danielson-Nigel from Unified (although that may have been before we even started the show) would be my most likely candidates. It’s also entirely possible that I’ve never rated anything a 10.
Anyway, I have an idea for a project to fill in the Steen-out period that would cover some of these bases. Just need to flesh out some details and discuss with Brian (and others).

Frank, I definitely remember giving those two matches tens. I don’t think I gave Danielson-McGuinness from “Unified” a ten, but I think I gave it to the Aries & Strong vs. Briscoes match right before it. It really clicked with me at the time. Other than that, a bunch of 9s and 9.5s in ye good olde days (of the promotion, not our show).

Gotcha! Yeah, I always go back and forth between the Dragon/McGuiness Unified match and Dragon/Kenta GBH5 match as to which one of those is my favorite ROH match ever. Pretty awesome that those two matches occurred on back to back months. I’m kinda in the Bryan Alvarez camp on the Briscoes vs. Aries & Strong tag match; lots of MOVEZZZZZ but little substance in between (but still a really good match). All of these matches happened in 2006, when I was 18 YEARS OLD!!!!!
