Match # 146: Crowbar vs. Vampiro (Nitro 10/23/00)
Crowbar’s new character is a retarded white pimp. Wasn’t that interested in him anyway. Vampiro actually has a cooler darker gimmick than Sting in theory, but not in practice. The star presence he may have had from Mexico only transfers slightly to WCW. The dying days of WCW continue with this match.
Vampiro takes a good three minutes to get to the ring, and it becomes obvious he’s both full of his entrance and stalling because Crowbar is supposed to attack in the aisle way. Crowbar is busy taking self-imposed back bumps in the ring. He finally runs at Vampiro, who hits him with – wait for it – nunchucks. Mostly punches while Vamp controls. He has a great look and some presence, but it’s a very exciting wrestler past spin kicks and a few other flashy spots. Crowbar is kinda just there (throwing chops) in this one. Mark Madden is pretty horrible announcing here, which kills me as a long time apologist. Intermittent brawling which is sometimes serious and sometimes disinterested. I like Crowbars punches when he throws them. Big spot is Vamp taking a gut buster/knee drop on the steel steps.
They are openly admitting on commentary they have no idea why they goes have an issue or why they are fighting in a hardcore match. This one is pretty much why people hated the middler stuff from ECW. I will say the Vamp suplex off the top ropes was pretty great. I think Vamp wishes he was RVD in the ring and Crow Sting outside, but darker. These guys no sell or half-sell a ton of damage and walk through a ton of unprotected chair shots. I give up. This is boring noise with a visual.
Guess I should give you the finish. All this crap, with attempt at a pin, is to set up druids coming out with two tables, one on top of the other, to set up a table spot from the Nitro DJ’s position. Yes, they had a house DJ. Vampiro grabs the throat, makes big eyes, and choke slams Crowbar through the table. I was wrong: he wants to be the Undertaker. 1 star and 1/10.
