Match # 140: Scott Steiner vs. Goldberg (Nitro 7/18/00)

Talk about having to lower my standards for this disk of wrestling. Steiner was the walking wounded at this point, and was more gimmick than wrestler as he gutted out a main event push here. TNA and the last year of WCW have A LOT in common unfortunately. I guess Goldberg is gonna lead us through this match, but man is it a styles class considering Steiner will never let Goldberg over power him or run through him. Now that I’ve jinxed myself, let’s see them prove me wrong.

Steiner is out with the sirens and hot valet. It was a good time to be Big Poppa Pump. Booker T is the babyface on commentary. He’s also the world champ. Goldberg’s entrance is abbreviated from its former length and security detail. Steiner does look concerned, and the atmosphere is promising.
Wow, this is like watching Doc/Gordy take on the Steiners from ’92 WCW. Very stiff and snug, hard shots (nothing unprofessional), and some suplexes. Both guys are going back and forth. This is good 90s Japanese heavyweight style stuff. Incrementally they sell, as the other gains the advantage. Goldberg press slams Steiner, which was impressive. Steiner has a comeback with a belly to belly. The crowd actually likes Steiner. He’s a “cool heel”, which actually adds to this.

Well, it got stupid three minutes in. Steiner put his Recliner finisher on Goldberg, then decked the ref for no reason. Booker T, out there on commentary, checks the ref and then gets in the ring. Golberg spears Steiner, Booker ends up kicking Golberg, and Kevin Nash comes out drinking a beer. Crap, and this was so good too. Three minutes of a great match. Did these guys ever do a solid PPV version, because I’m not aware of it if Steiner/Goldberg did? Nash powerbombs Goldy and Steiner, and stares at Booker. Okay… 2 ¼ and 4/10.
