ROH on HDNet 9/11/09 LIVE Taping Results (Spoilers)

Posted on September 11, 2009 by Steve Kriske

Brian Streleckis, ROH, Results

After skipping that darn Thursday taping, Brian was back at The Arena sent in results throughout the evening. The crowd was larger than for some recent tapings. He was seated opposite the hard camera, so he should be visible on the TV shows, and was in prime dive territory.

The highlight of the pre-show was “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown squashing tag team champ-turned-jobber Sal Rinauro.

1) Kenny King defeated Brent Albright. Rhett Titus grabbed and held Albright’s leg from the outside, allowing King to get the pin.

2) D-Lo Brown defeated Sal Rinauro. Sal does double squash duty for the night.

Nigel McGuinness cut an awesome farewell promo.

3) The American Wolves defeated the Young Bucks to retain the ROH Tag Team Championships. Eddie Edwards made Matt Jackson tap out to a half crab for the win. Great match.

Intermission

4) The Briscoes vs. Dark City Fight Club went to a No Contest. They brawled all over the place and the ref threw the match out.

5) Eddie Kingston defeated Claudio Castagnoli. Kingston got a hold of Chris Hero’s elbow pad and used it to hit his spinning back fist for the victory.

6) Austin Aries defeated Colt Cabana (non-title). Aries used the Last Chancery for the submission win.

Intermission

7) Chris Hero defeated Delirious. Sonjay Dutt attacked Delirious before the match, so he was at a disadvantage, and fell prey to Hero’s elbow strike.

8 ) Grizzly Redwood & Necro Butcher defeated Prince Nana & Joey Ryan in a Beard vs. Beard Match. Ernie Osiris was injured and didn’t wrestle, but his beard was on the line for the Embassy. The faces got the win, and after the match, Redwood put Osiris out with a sleeper hold and cut off most of his beard.

9) “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown defeated Darren Matthews.

10) Roderick Strong defeated Bryan Danielson. The atmosphere was electric for Danielson’s last ROH match in Philadelphia, and the match lived up to it. Strong hit a gutbuster off the second rope and a Yakuza Kick to earn the win.

After the match, Strong cut a promo thanking Danielson for his contributions to the company, and the locker room emptied as the wrestlers (including the injured Tyler Black, making his first appearance of the night) thanked and congratulated him. Danielson gave a farewell promo in which he encouraged the fans to keep supporting ROH, and he put over the young wrestlers as well as Nigel McGuinness. “The Final Countdown” played to close out the show.

Really fun time. I was among a very decent group of fans, including a very nice couple that lent me some streamers for the departing stars. No trash throwing tonight, though I heard there was some last night. Damn neighborhood kids swiping tickets from the Oregon Diner…

Other pre-show matches I didn’t have time to text back saw Bobby Dempsey & Andy Ridge defeat Bobby Shields & Bruno Marciano, then Gino Giovanni (a prelim regular who’s name I could never catch until now) & Tony Neece (now doing the gimmick of “The Premier Athlete”) defeating The Bravado Brothers (whom you may recognize as two of the long-haired scrubs working as ringside staff, finally wrestling here). Giovanni even got to cut a promo beforehand to get across everyone’s character.

Nigel was greeted with great appreciation from the fans when he came out for his promo. He took a moment to introduce the one person that believed in him and never doubted him this entire time, without whom this would not be possible: himself! He then went into full-on cocky mode, saying he’s “leaving… on a jet plane, not sure when he’ll be back again,” and walked out the front door. Then he came back to cut a more sincere promo, thanking Cary Silken, past and present office, and all of the wrestlers and fans.

After Albright vs. King, which featured Rhett Titus at ringside being hilarious, Albright tried to get his hands on King before Aries ran out for a 3-on-1 attack. King & Titus attempted to give him a spike piledriver on a chair, mirroring what happened to Jerry Lynn last month, but Cabana ran out for the save, setting up a match for later.

Rinauro had a hand print from Rasche Brown as he appeared a little later to face D-Lo Brown. D-Lo now has a gimmick where he takes a break during his match to twitter about it, and I deem it awesome.

I knew the American Wolves wouldn’t lose the tag titles to the Young Bucks given how they have the Ladder War coming up, but damn if there weren’t a lot of close calls. A tremendous match, right up there with some of the Wolves’ best matches.

One of the Briscoes put a hurting to Kory Chavis about a foot away from me in the crowd during their brawl.

Chris Hero came out to demean Kingston before his match, introducing Claudio as his opponent, so there was indeed Kings of Wrestling reunion here. Claudio did the glove slap again! A very good match that Hero stuck around for, sitting in the aisle, and he was livid when Kingston took out Hero’s loaded elbow pad to enhance his backfist.

Aries vs. Cabana was a pretty fun match, not as good as the other two main events, but still quite enjoyable. Lots of shenanigans toward the end, as King & Titus ran out to interfere, Albright followed to thwart him, and Cabana got dropkicked and brainbuster suplexed for his troubles, leading into the submission loss.

The bearded barefoot babyfaces got the win when Grizzly hit Ryan with a tornado DDT. Just before this, Necro was sent over the guardrail near us, and he accidentally kicked a front row fan in the face with his bare foot.

Danielson vs. Strong was tremendous. Lots of chops and lots of great wrestling. The crowd may have chanted, “Thank You Dragon” for a good minute. As I may have guessed from where I was sitting, Danielson did a dive into my area. Everyone knew to grab their chairs and get the hell out of dodge. Great to experience this up close, as I probably won’t have the same luxury in the Manhattan Center in two weeks.

Danielson’s promo, as he was surrounded by all of the stars, prelim guys, etc., was very nice. He mentioned that he’s not having the best matches on every show with stuff like the American Wolves-Young Bucks match, he put over those two teams, Strong, Black, and the Briscoes as having a lot of great matches recently, and that ROH has the best collection of wrestlers in the world. He then pointed out Nigel as being one of his best opponents. People gave another great ovation for him as he got back in the ring, and the two talked up their match in two weeks. As one wrestling hero of many little kids and tween girls fucked up beyond belief today, it was nice to say goodbye and good luck (for the first of two times) to two wrestling heroes of mine.

The Final Countdown Tour shirt is a fine piece of work. Steve will be jealous.

Next set of tapings are November 5th & 6th, featuring KENTA.
