Match # 66: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera (Nitro 9/15/97)

The crowd is tough on them in the opening minute. Rey gets his stuff in, head scissor included, and Juvi manages to miss a drop kick on a prone Rey Jr. But right after we get a power bomb to the floor and the crowd makes some noise. Guerrera’s control segment is fine, and actually pretty brutal for how small he himself is. Rey’s come back offense is always the highlight of any match. Still, these guys aren’t breaking any new ground for them. I guess a more positive spin on that is them giving us the best stuff between the two after a few years of trial and error.

Odd moment where Rey gets caught up in getting a big pop from a move and waits forever to pin Juvi. Brain fart. Juvi is definitely more motivated here than he was normally, and I never thought he was what I’d consider lazy. Rey comes with a somersault plancha in this one and lands it perfect. Fan’s just seem to wait for spots, so at times this is disjoined for me. Maybe I’m just to wrapped up in reactions tonight. Rey wins in 7 minutes with the (perfect) springboard ‘rana, so in a way this mirrored Match # 65. Eddie was a better heel and that match told a better story without the need for as many high spots to try and get over. If all matches were this easy to compare, contrast, and score I guess this wouldn’t be as much fun. 3 and 6/10.
