Fun night, with the the three-way and Generico-Richards being very good matches, and the third main event of Black-McGuinness being a little less what we’re used to, but still good. I was very interested in how Nigel would work this match, and he ended up doing a lot of work on Tyler’s arm to build up to the London Dungeon. Good stuff similar to what he’s done before and what Danielson (notably absent tonight) does. This match had the only dive on my side.
Austin Aries’ segment was something else. The 2001 theme hit, people were expecting Flair, and Eastman even announced “the multi-time World Champion” before The Fucking Man walked out. He had a lollipop in his mouth, showed off the World Title under his jacket (”Excuse me while I whip this out.”), and thanked the fans for their support, only to follow up by saying if they believe that, they’re just what he has in his mouth now: a sucker. He paraphrased the late John Tolos, saying how you can now spell World Champion A-R-I-E-S. He ran down the Phillies for getting swept by the Blue Jays, talked about how tight he is with Tommy Lasorda, and ran down a bunch of fans in the crowd. He dared one guy in the corner to come into the ring, but he played it cool. A little bit later, he dared two scrawny guys in my section - whom I can only describe as the ticking time bomb type - to come in, and it looked like they were about to before ref Paul Turner came out to ringside. Aries was smiling ear-to-ear at these two guys at first. Eastman attempted to close the segment, but Aries closed it himself. Fantastic heel work by this man, and I assume/hope most of this will make TV.
Albright was clean shaven. Following his loss in the tag, Claudio successfully stomped a steel chair into Albright’s head. Very safely done, and Albright came up bleeding. Necro and Grizzly ran out to prevent any further damage. Following Necro’s match in the third hour, Cabana, Albright, and Grizzly came out requesting Necro’s services in the 8-man elimination match I assume we’ll be getting Saturday night. Cabana asked if he was crazy enough and hardcore enough for the match, so Necro took a staple gun to poor Sami Callihan (still laying in the ring at this time). Cabana said, “A simple Yes would suffice,” and made sure that Necro wouldn’t use the staple gun on any of them. Also, people chanting USA against The Embassy is apparently catching on with some people.
The post-match melee following Generico vs. Richards was hard to see from where I was, but very crazy, with Sara Del Rey punching a bunch of scrubs trying to break it up (including Bobby Dempsey!) and Steen punching Del Rey! One of the wrestlers threw a garbage can towards the ring. The Steen-Edwards match later was announced as having their respective partners banned from ringside.
