Match # 125: Buddy Landel vs. Freddy (8/12/89)

Poor Buddy Landel spent the early part of this decade as a future star/rising star, and by the end he’s wrestling “Freddy” in a dying Memphis territory. It just ain’t fair!

Crowd loved Freddy, and Landell’s scared as hell stuff is pretty classic. Landell gained a lot of weight for this role, he must be a method actor.

Freddy gets Lawler to sit at ringside and watch his back halfway through the match. The patimiming here is classic, but that’s the most interesting action. Actually, Landell’s selling is the best thing here. Funny comedy match where the fans are actually taking it seriously, which makes this the polar opposite of stuff going on in 2009.

This was actually a lot of fun and much better then what I was fearing. Ends in a heel duo disqualification, w/ Lawler coming to the rescue, heels coming out, and a (what else) Jason masked guy falling over fat Ronnie Gossett as he tries to make the save. Hilarious! 2 ¾ stars and 6/10.
