Match # 73: Dutch Mantell vs. Eddie Gilbert (9/17/84)

The match starts around the 5 minute mark. First move that really catches me is a Mantell suplex bringing Gilbert back into the ring. Dutch is working a wicked head lock in there. He uses it as his base after a move or a pin attempt. I like this style of ring control/psychology. They trade awesome punches, and Dutch tries to go back to slowing it with a headlock, but he gets dumped right on his head. Gilbert doesn’t just pop right up though. He sells the prior damage. Gilbert takes Mantell’s left knee to school. First with the post, then the apron, a chair, and with any move he can think. Strong “work a body part” match here.

Mantell takes advantage of a Gilbert miss, and Gilbert bounces around hard for the guy. Great stiff action. Hart interferes and Eddie Gilbert gets the pin with his feet on the ropes. Controversy reigns supreme. Paul Morton restarts the match. Dutch rolls a distraught Gilbert up for the quick 1-2-3 win.
He retains his International title. Gilbert DDTs him and beats him with his own belt. Had I seen the first five minutes this might have gotten even more love. 3 ¼ and 6.5/10.
