Match # 4: Bill Dundee & Tony Boyles vs. Wayne Farris & Larry Latham (6/7/80)

Latham and Farris are the heels here, known as the Blonde Bombers. Farris is better known as the Honkey Tonk Man from late 80s WWF. To see him here you would not know it is the same guy. They’re managed by Sgt. Danny Davis, who would go on to be the head trainer at WWE developmental territory OVW. He also owns OVW.

At the start Russell mentions Tony Boyles is a rookie, which is a nice touch for setting up his role here. Early on the heels just feed Dundee, which I enjoy. They heel bumping and stooging is fun and it plays well early. I’m also a fan of the announcers telling you how much time has gone by and reminding the viewer of time limit remaining.

Boyles gets in and does little. He’s compared to Paul Ellering for whatever reason by Russell. He redeems himself by mentioning the skill base Boyle is at and hints he needs improving. Dundee does a double stop well before Low Ki brought it in vogue. His offense is really innovative for the time. Great spot where Farris keeps dropping an elbow on Latham by accident.

The heels end up getting the heat on Boyles but the match breaks down a few times in there. I don’t mean that in a negative or a Mid South tag team finish way, as the desperate Dundee keeps coming in and then a two on one advantage will gain control. The three vets in here know how to tell a story even if the work isn’t always solid. The beat down of Boyles is more interesting for Dundee’s cameos in the ring then Boyles’ selling.

The heels manage to completely botch the finish – twice. A stuff piledriver (sort of) finishes the match as Boyles takes the loss while Dundee is beating on manager Davis.

Afterward the heels destroy the faces with Davis’ helmet to some good crowd reaction. Dundee is busted open and after a commercial cuts a promo demanding a match right then with all the heels. Russell is great begging Dundee to relax. Danny Davis comes out to bump around for Dundee and it’s a real beating, modern of old school. Eddie Marlin (the match maker on TV) gets involved to break it up, but gets powder in the eyes (trademark Memphis). The heels continue the post-match beating . Jerry Jarrett, looking just like his son today, comes in clears the ring of the heels (just like Jeff would on TNA). Yay. Post match was just as interesting as the match itself. 2 ¾ and 5/10.
