Match # 124: The Fantastics & Missing Link vs. Eddie Gilbert, John Tatum & Sting (8/3/86)

Dark Journey is a face now and Missy Hyatt makes an appearance with the heels. She’s slept with everyone but Sting on the heels side… maybe Sting too. Neat.

They do the hot opening with great tag team cooperation from the Fantastics and Tatum does a great job of making Missing Link seem like a killer. When we settle it down Eddie Gilbert and Tatum take turns trying to make lesser talent look both cool and bad ass. There seems to be a lot of that on this set. Mid South had some crappy wrestling babyfaces!

Early Sting. He would get better, but not a ton better. Looks like he was a capable hand early on who everyone thought was a quick study, but never got really great, just decent. Very much John Cena, which is funny because early on in Cena’s career he was compared a lot to Sting, and may end up be a better drawing version of him.

The heat is good because Bobby Fulton sells so well and the heels were really on with their antics. The crowd is super hot too, and while Duggan and Taylor were the draws, I’d take the Fantastics in the ring over them. The faces are just terrible on offense, but very good when Fulton is the only one in to sell. This heels squad was just as strong as the Freebirds were a match ago, just not as strong presence-wise.

There are a few ugly parts to this match with Sting-Fulton or Missing Link-anyone, but the hope spots and heel heat is dead on.

Finish is the match breaking down after the hot tag to Tommy Rogers. It gets slightly clumsy, the women get involved, and Hyatt hits Gilbert by accident. Rogers elbow drops and pins him for the win. 2 ¾ and 6.2/10.
