Mid South Diaries: Match #118

Match # 118: Terry Taylor vs. Buddy Roberts (6/8/86)
How crazy is it that after the last match I watched (Hayes/Roberts vs Dibiase/Taylor) the match up I’d rather see at this moment is Dibiase vs Taylor. I’m not crying about this one by any means though.
Hayes is at ringside and JR mentions right away it’s odd he’s there and not announcing with him, so you know the finish up front.
This match is so much tighter and crisper, and really quicker than I remember wrestling in my childhood. I started watching about two years later. Damn WWF. Even Crockett though, didn’t have this in abundance on TV that I saw at the time (and I’m sure when you put up the best stuff they offered in 1986 you’d find it. Roberts moved well, bumped well, and threw one hell of a drop kick for an older guy.
Taylor beats Roberts up and down, fast and slow, until Roberts out toughs the TV champ a few minutes in. Taylor is quick to turn around his situation in ways that get fan reactions. He does the same tree of woe, and then stomps the guts after asking the fans.
Roberts advantages are well timed, if short, and he hits that great second rope elbow to the top of the head. Somehow Roberts bleeds from the back of the head, which is odd. He takes a bunch of back body drops, which were all over with the fans. Finish is satisfying as Hayes gets involved but it backfires and Taylor rolls up Roberts.
Funny post-match bit where they shill a number to call if you’d like to bring Mid South (UWF at this point) to your city. Who wants to be a promoter this week? Match was short but good and had a good little TV story to it. Can’t reward it to heavily though because there was a lot better than that match on the set, but it is important to have short matches with a real finish like this. 2 ½ and 6/10.
