Match # 77: Ted DiBiase vs. Bob Sweetan (Taped Fist) (10/11/85)
Dibiase and Doc had turned on Sweetan because he was blamed for the stables loss of the tag belts. He seemed like he was being used short term by Dibiase storyline-wise anyway. Also, Sweetan is a chubby load so Dibiase has to be a great heel to get him cheers. Dibiase has started lightening his hair, too.
Looks like Houston. Yep, there’s ol’ Boesch. Tapes fist match, and Dibiase proves it by punching the turnbuckle pad a lot. Sweetan corners him, but Dibiase scoots out of the ring. Sweetan knows this is a big match, so he follows him out and uses a chair on him. It’s no DQ. Fan’s are appreciative of Sweetan giving it to the longtime heel.
Back in the ring, we see wrestling. Well thought out too. Dibiase is getting his tonight. Begs off, reverses, he punches, but they’re blocked and he takes one. Big bump and a reset on the outside. Dibiase looks in great shape, and he does the little things I love. Back in he holds the face to show he’s still hurting/upset about the punch. HE was made a fool of, and he’s not gonna take it. He gets control soon and we get smooth offense. I like the guys pace and moves, what can I say?
They work in the taped fists as Dibiase abuses Sweetan with well-placed punches. He throws him outside. Chairshot. A second one… misses but hits the post for effect. Sweetan comeback on the outside. Nevermind. It’s cut off and Sweetan is bleeding.
Sweetan sells his beating pretty well, stumbling around. He’s no star presence wise or in the ring, but he’s a workable guy. Dibiase posts him and gives him more punches. Sweetan still on the outside on the floor, and the story right now is Dibiase is really beating this man up.
Sweetan’s comeback looks horrible. A shitty back body (barely) drop and then a poor fist off Dibiase coming off the top. Like Flair, Dibiase never really hit it, but did get to jump off the top. It’s not a full comeback, as Dibiase takes over again. Thank God.
Boesch, forever brilliant or clueless, is on tonight. He’s selling this as the climax of a bitter feud. Dibiase on offense always good, but he’s not fully drawing the crowd in like usual. It’s Sweetan hulking up that does! Whatever works.
Sweetan’s punches suck, and most of his movement isn’t great, but Dibiase sells so well it has a nice feel to it. Dibiase busted open bad, and Sweetan milks it for the bloodthirsty patrons. They give Dibiase a count and he milks it well, up at the count of 8. Sweetan pildrives him. A pin gets two. Boesch really makes him seem in peril.
Dibiase levels the playing field by taking punches, bloody as hell, then ducking one and getting a back suplex on Sweetan. Dibiase ends up getting knocked out of the ring and puts the glove on. Sweetan brings him in strong style. He picks up a staggered Dibiase, a few more things happen, but Dibiase decks him with the loaded glove. Completely legal, but it gives Sweetan an excuse. Dibiase wins with a three count. Stupid Sweetan didn’t even bleed well. 2 ¾ and 6/10.
