A note before the report on TPI Night 2. In honor of the great live report work done on this site, I’ve made a special category/tag that you can search for on the site. It’s “Robert Dolezil Reporting”, and soon you’ll be able to read all of Bob’s live reports search searching through that tag, and I’d like to thank Bob for his wonderful contributions to this site.
Now, continuing his solid work, Robert reports about one of the best nights in IWA-MS history, as the crowd rallies around one man to win the tournament and title, and a brutal grudge match takes place.
IWA-MS Ted Petty Invitational 2007 Night 2
September 29th 2007
Midlothian, IL
TPI QUARTERFINAL MATCHES
1. Josh Abercrombie submitted Devon Moore in 5:12. Decent match, but too short. Abercrombie hit the Taliban back pack and what looked like a cobra stretch for the win.
2. Brent Albright pinned Joker in 10:55. Good hard hitting strong style match. These guys had a nice spot where they kept trading armbars. Albright won with the half-nelson suplex.
3. Human Tornado pinned Nate Webb at 8:19. Good match, where Tornado was very funny entertaining with this dance moves. Tornado got the pin with Dat N**** Dead. After the match, Webb got a mic and said so you beat me in a match, but there is no way in hell you’re going to beat me in a dance off. Tornado said “I’m gonna have to kill this bitch.†The both of them were dancing at the same time and it was entertaining and hilarious.
4. Mike Quackenbush submitted Joey Ryan retained the IWA-MS Light Heavyweight title in 11:44. Good match. Toward the end of the match, Quack apparently botched a suicide dive and landed on his head. It looked and sounded bad from my viewpoint, but I was on the opposite side of the ring. Quack eventually got back in the ring and won with a leg submission. Good match with added emotion as Quack appeared to have a concussion.
5. Claudio Castagnoli pinned Davey Richards in 8:50. Good match, but I hoped it would go longer. Lots of lucha style moves in this match, at least more than Richards normally does in ROH. Claudio got the win with the Ricola bomb.
6. Chuck Taylor pinned Scorpio and retained the IWA-MS Heavyweight Title in 14:09. Pretty solid match. Scorpio looked again here, but not as good as yesterday. When Scorpio went to the top rope, Taylor crotched him on it and hit a Omega Driver for the win.
TPI SEMI-FINAL MATCHES (7,8,9)
7. Claudio Castagnoli pinned Brent Albright at 14:19. Good match. Castagnoli won with the Ricola bomb. Good parts of the match with avoiding armbars and European Uppercuts.
8. Chuck Taylor pinned Human Tornado and retained the IWA-MS Heavyweight title in 12:20. Decent match. I can’t really remember the specifics of the match. Taylor won with a Omega Driver.
It was announced that Mike Quackenbush could no longer compete in the tournament. Josh Abercrombie came out to accept a victory by forfeit. But then Quack’s music hit and the place went crazy. Quack insisted on having the match .
9. Mike Quackenbush submitted Josh Abercrombie in 9:44. Good match with the crowd incredibly into Quack and going crazy for near falls. The crowd popped huge when Quack kicked out of a Taliban back pack. Quack would get the win with a twisted ankle submission.
NONTOURNAMENT MATCHES
10. Last Man Standing Match: Eddie Kingston defeated Chris Hero in 23:51. This match was BRUTAL. It started out immediately when both guys were brawling by the crowd entrance. They brawled throughout the crowd for about five minutes and I believe Hero was suplexed onto a non gimmicked table collapsing it. Later they were throwing chairs at each other Sabu style. Back at ringside, Hero hit a running boot on Kingston, and Kingston nailed the Kobashi chop sequence on Hero. Back in the ring later these guys destroyed each other with brutal head-butts, you could hear the thuds throughout the building. Hero did some innovative spots with a chair where he had Kingston wrapped up in it and was sitting on it at the same time as giving Kingston a Boston crab. Hero brought in a guardrail. Eventually the guardrail was leaning against the turnbuckles and Kingston gave Hero a sick looking back driver on the guardrail caving it in. This was a great match where you could feel the hatred between these two and it just filled with stiffness and innovative violence.
11. IWA-MS Tag Team Title match Nigel McGuiness & BJ Whitmer defeat Sal & Vito Thomaselli by DQ when Brent Albright attacks Nigel McGuinness after Nigel & BJ start brawling after a miss communication in 18:01. This was a good hard hitting match. The best part of the match for me was when McGuinness hit an absolutely brutal and wicked short arm lariat on Sal that got a huge pop from the crowd. After the match the Thomasellis were pissed that BJ and Albright messed up their match. They challenged them to a match whenever they were available.
TPI FINALS
Kind of an interesting note, Quack came to the ring to song “I Still
Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For†by U2 (thanks to my friend
Dan for knowing what the song was). I thought that was a very appropriate song to use.
12. Mike Quackenbush defeated Claudio Castagnoli and Chuck Taylor in 17:43 to retain the IWA-MS Light Heavyweight Title, win the IWA-MS Heavyweight Title and win the 2007 Ted Petty Invitational. The crowd was heavily rooting for Quack and just dying to see him win.
Good action throughout with an amazingly hot crowd. Claudio hit a ricola bomb on Quack for near fall and the place went crazy when Quack kicked out. Quack would later pin Claudio with a tombstone variation for a huge pop at the 14:06 mark. There was no rest or anything after that and Taylor and Quack kept going after each other. Taylor hit an Omega Driver on Quack but Quack kicked out at the last second to an insane pop from the crowd. Quack would try a few more submissions, but Taylor would escape. Quack would hit his tombstone variation on Taylor and then get him to submit with a leg submission to an even bigger insane pop.
The place was going crazy for Quack like I have never really seen a crowd do before. Quack was on knees and held both belts in the air and was it a beautiful sight. I think it was safe to say that not everyone’s eye were dry. There were thunderous chants of Quack and Thank you Quack. Eddie Kingston came to the ring and hugged Quack. Ian came out and said that moments like this are what made him go into the wrestling business. Ian said he is glad a guy like Quack won, as Quack is a tremendously classy person and the wrestling business is lucky to have him.
Quack got the mic and thanked the fans for being a part of a weekend that he will never forget as long as he lives. I personally have never wanted a person to win an IWA match more that I wanted Quack to win tonight. I also have never felt this much emotion while being at an IWA show. This stuff with Mike Quackenbush this weekend made me proud to be a pro wrestling fan.
