Well said. I do wish that the companies themselves were the friends saying “Dude, knock it off. This will not end well.” After many MANY instances, they did w/ Regal and Eddie G., but unfortunately, that rehab obviously was not a steroid-specific intervention.

This Alyssa I like.

While I agree with most of your analogy Johnny I would offer this-

Say you know someone who loves to get drunk and then drive. You tell them repeatedly- "Dude, knock it off. This will not end well." Then you get the call one day that they are dead becasue they were driving drunk. Of course you are going to be sad, but there is a part of you that is angry becasue they could have prevented this. I think that's where I would feel in the case of someone like Cena passing away.

It's as I've said to a few people on and off the internet. People who get into wrestling know what the business entails- they know that there are drug issues and steroids and everything. So when it ends up bad for them that doesn't make them tragic heroes. They knew the risks and threw their chips in. It's a shame that it ends the way it does, but isn't always unexpected.

Looks like Brian Hansley has a a friend to watch with on Monday nights. I'll have to see if we can pull Paul Siegfried out of mothballs to spout his points and equal it out. Thanks for the thoughts Alyssa. Sadly, i think we'll see reform in the NFL in regards to pension before we see drug reform in the WWE. After all, the NFL has a union, even if they're being selfish at this point.

This is somewhat off the article topic, but something that I thought about while reading. While alot of us have already decided whether we're watching Monday nights these days - I've been absent more then not the last few years, but the rating was down to just below a 3.4 this week, it's lowest in years - I do think this brings up another question.

Does ANYONE shed a tear for a wrestler who dies after this? To me, John Cena is an excellent public relations guy. The WWE owes him so much more then he realizes (sadly, as Alyssa pointed out,he won't until he's 45-50 yrs. old). But past a knee jerk reaction of anger at John Cena (I find him, like the rest, pathetic, but reserve most of my anger for the higher ups) I don't hold his appearance against him. That said, maybe I'm a stupid idealist, but I wouldn't sit next to any attorney and pimp a company like WWE.

I'm getting off track. My point is, if John Cena dies tomorrow, or in ten years, do you care? Would you watch a tribute show cleverly made by WWE with heartfelt messages and 10 bell salutes? John Cena has a right to say whatever he wants or represent anyone who pays him. He's very good at it. But the real difference for me coming off the last few weeks is that while Alyssa is right - we aren't surprised by the depths of the industry - many of us are mad. We've finally had it. And when Cena, Jericho, Foley, or any of the other insecure spineless stunt men pass away from a life in the business, I think I'd rather skip those broadcasts, news articles, or magazine covers.
