IWA-MS Candido Cup Night 1
Midlothian , IL . Don Preston Rec Center 5-25-07
Write-up by Robert Dolezil
1. IWA-MS Light Heavyweight Title Match, Brandon Thomaselli pinned Metal Master (Chad Collyer under a mask) with a rollup while grabbing the tights in 11:45 . This match was just okay. The first half was very slow. It only picked up a little bit and Thomaselli just hit the rollup and held the tights.
2. IWA-MS World Heavyweight Title Match, Chuck Taylor defeated Devon Moore at 7:26 with a reverse Omega Driver. This match was solid and featured the usual good heelish comedy from Chuck Taylor. At the 3:20 mark, Taylor noticed a fan had a “24†shirt on and commented on it in a positive way. The fan yelled back “kill him Jack Bauer style.†Taylor did this hilarious spot where he pulled the pin from an imaginary grenade and threw it complete with his own personal sound effects including the explosion sound. That was hilarious. This was a decent match, but not as good as the match these two had in Joliet IL on 5-12-07 .
All of the following matches are first round Candido Cup matches:
3. The Pretty Unreals of Ash & Mike Elgin defeated Drake Younger and Vortekz when Elgin pinned younger with like an inverted sit out tombstone piledriver at 10:40 . This was a real good match, all 4 guys worked hard and fast. My favorite spot of the match was when Drake and Elgin kept exchanging huge strong style strikes on each other with forearms and then a brutal lariat.
4. The Bashams defeated Dysfunction and Silas Young at 10:01 when Damaja hit a Baldo Bomb/ two handed sit out chokeslam. Just an okay match. The Bashams were getting a lot of heat from the crowd.
5. 2.0 beat the North Star Express in 12:22 . I was getting nachos while this was going on, and I believe the finish was with a roll up. I didn’t see much of this, but Joey Eastman is a great heel manager.
6. Davey Richards & BJ Whitmer defeated BLKOUT of Joker & Sabian when Richards made Sabian tap to a kimura at 13:09 . This was a very exciting and hard hitting match. There was great back and forth, hard hitting action from all members involved. The highlight of the match was when Whitmer and Joker were taking turns giving each other exploders and completely no selling them, getting up and running to hit the next one. Stiff, great match.
7. The Iron Saints defeated the Havana Pitbulls in 12:30 with a double team ddt where one guy held his legs and the other hit the ddt. This match was real solid. Filled with lots of chops from the Thomasellis and kicks from the Pitbulls and other good strikes overall.
8. Axl Rotten & Mickie Knuckles defeated Ricky Morton & Z- Barr in 9:23 after Z- Bar hit Morton and he was rolled up for a pin. Nothing happened in this match and it was just a set up for Morton vs. Z – Bar match the next night where the loser will eat dog food.
9. Cheech & Cloudy defeated El Generico & Super Dragon in 16:19 when Super Dragon hit a Psycho Driver on Cheech and someone bumped into them during the pin and Cheech ended up pinning Super Dragon. El Generico and Super Dragon weren’t getting along early, Dragon was flipping everyone off while El Generico was pointing to the air. The match started when Dragon and Generico were standing outside the ring still and Cheech and Cloudy hit stereo dives This was a real fast paced match and it was one of the best of the night. Super Dragon would hit stiff hard chops and lariats and El Generico would hit several of his big running yakuza kicks in the corner. Real good match.
10. Homicide & Low Ki defeat Matt Sydal & Josh Abercrombie at 22:02 when Abercrombie was on Ki’s shoulders and Homicide jumped off the top rope and gave him a bull dog. Once again, another very good fast paced and hard hitting match. Ki hit lots of chops. It seemed like Sydal was doing most of the work for his team, and it didn’t seem like he did any real big aerial moves (that didn’t take away from the match, I’m just pointing it out). It was great to see Homicide and Low Ki teaming together again, they have such a great presence about them. All 4 guys were working fast and hard, this was a very good match probably just short of a **** rating.
This was a very good night of pro wrestling action. There weren’t any absolutely amazing matches, but the majority of matches were all very good with the Top 3 in no order being Whitmer & Richards vs. Joker & Sabian, Super Dragon & El Generico vs. Cheech & Cloudy, and Homicide & Low Ki vs. Matt Sydal & Josh Abercrombie.
