After hitting a home run last week with the show closing angle could TNA come back strong again this week. I’d say they hit the fence.
Let’s start with the part of the show that has fired all the internet into a frenzy. TNA gave away the first meeting of Kurt Angle and Sting in a 4 minute match before Teach Christian interfered. Many are yelling that “This was another marquee match TNA blew.” Fact is, they didn’t blow anything.
Yes the allure of them hooking up for the first time is now gone but the way everything was structured counteracted that. Angle and Sting had a fairly high energy couple of minutes before being broken up. It was essentially the same as seeing a trailer for a movie. The finish worked perfectly too because it helped Angle find a way to weasal himself into the title picture.
This all led to a match later in the show between Sting and Christian. Again these guys had a energetic little match before Angle got involved and caused a DQ. The angle is leading towards a 3 way dance for the title at Sacrifice and they have effectively built themselves towards that.
The other angle which really worked was the culmination of the Eric Young’s friend angle. For months now Robert Roode has berated Young. On Impact Young stood up for himself and delivered a really good promo in response about how the only thing he has is wrestling. Robert Roode and Traci Brooks beat up Young until his friend Jeff Jarrett made the save and laid out Traci Brooks with a guitar shot.
Roode was pitch perfect in his role as the antagonist. Eric Young played his role great as well and did good on the mic. Jarrett came in and the heat segment was pretty good for the whole time he was there. It was sustained.
For all that TNA gets wrong, and all the heat they take (some deserved, some undeserved) they are doing some really good things angle wise right now. They aren’t sitting in a pitch black room anymore, and losing their way.
