The Morning After- 04/19/07 Impact

Yes by this point it is quite a few mornings after. However there is something that needs to be said about this past week’s show.

No matter what network they were appearing on TNA never seemed to really hit that home run angle. The Joe-Kurt brawl a few months back was good but lacked the backstory that can really drive home angles. This past week however they had everything working for them in the show closing scene.

For months now Abyss has been getting pulled around by James Mitchell. They have had a program with Sting with the two major players battling for Abyss. Mitchell finally trumped Sting a few weeks ago by bringing in the mother of Abyss, and promising that if Abyss didn’t do what was told to him Mitchell would contact authorities.

For weeks as well Mitchell has referred to Abyss as a meal ticket and a child, further denegrating the guy.

This past week it all came to a head at the end of the tag title match between Team 3D and Christian/Abyss. The latter team lost and Mitchell decided now was the time to call the police. Abyss slapped the phone out of his hands and gave him the Black Hole Slam. Then however Scott Steiner, Tomko, AJ Styles, and Christian Cage all attacked and took turns hitting Abyss with chair shots, and a barbed wire bat. They finished him off with a Conchairto leaving Abyss a beaten and bloody mess in the middle of the ring (With cuts that apparently needed 30-40 stitches to close).

Now truthfully this is only half the story. TNA needs to use this strong base to bring back Abyss eventually as a big babyface and have him run through his tormentors. If TNA can do that it shows fans that they are capable of producing quality action and storytelling. If they follow up poorly it is another in a long line of missteps.

Give them this though- this is the strongest foundation they have had to build on becuase it is something they created and wasn’t built on false hope, or internet buzz.
