My disgust for the WWE’s revival of the ECW name continues on the 5.19.06 edition of Four for The Road as they land their newest “hot project” on the Sci-Fi Channel. that worked out well.
– World Wrestling Entertainment-sponsored ECW programming lands on the Sci-Fi Channel. How appropriate that WWE couldn’t place it’s new incarnation of ECW on the USA Network. After all, it’s the same network that turned down ECW in the fall of 2000 after it had been displaced by TNN. The Sci-Fi Channel produces content about unexplained phenomenon, so that’s a perfect fit. So far that’s about right when it comes to the ECW relaunch.
It came out of nowhere, this new ECW, about ten months after the original momentum of One Night Stand. No one seems to know if it will lose money taping in front of small crowds at National Guard Armories or lose fans taping in front of sorta big crowds before Smackdown tapings. Tommy Dreamer is even fighting Paul Heyman because he thinks it should be some kind of nostalgia tour!
Will ECW even make it to the old stars putting over some new guys, who won’t be as “hardcore”, simply because they’re under WWE contract? Why would any self respecting fan who saw an ECW show in its heyday (especially at the ECW Arena and on the Sports Channel system) want to come back for this? What incentive does a new fan have to seeing the Revolution, ten years later, as a transparent marketing ploy? I think they finally got one right; ECW should debut on a channel that broadcasts science fiction.
